Best Sunscreens for Babies and Kids
My first baby is somehow almost six months old. Don’t ask me how. It’s some kind of witchcraft. As we both transition from pajamas all day every day to outfits, I wanted to find the best sunscreen for his chunky little arms and legs. No harm shall come to those butterball rolls.
So I do what I normally do. I polled thousands of women on social media. Honestly, being able to poll so many experience people is one of the greatest privileges of having a little bit of an audience. Of course, I want to share their wisdom with all of you.
I’m no expert (unless we’re talking about Arby’s) but you want to avoid sunscreens with chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octocrylene, octisalate, and homosalate. Good natural sunscreens often have mineral UV filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. You’ll want at least an SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays.
You can also search for each brand on the Environmental Working Group’s website to see how they rank each one. From what I can see, Hello Bello and Tubby Todd rank the highest on their scale.
Special note: Use a makeup brush like this one to make applying to their little faces easier and more likely tear free. Many parents are also big fans on the stick sunscreen options. Most brands seem to have one.
The following are the most recommended products in no particular order.
Pipette The most popular. Goes on clear.
Hello Bello Recommended for daily use.
Blue Lizard This is reef safe. So if you’re headed to Hawaii (stop bragging) this will be perfect.
Think Baby Recommended for swimming.
