My Basic Hair Routine
Similar to my journey of learning to use makeup, for a long time I thought I just has bad hair and bad skin on my back. Turns out a strict hair diet of Suave isn’t that great for my hair, skin, or self-esteem. Though it probably was easier on my wallet.
That being said, though the hair products I purchase now are more expensive than what I found at my local grocery store, updating my routine has led to fewer purchases and less waste. I’m by no means a hair wizard like so many women online, but I have seen major improvements thanks to little updates. I know many women don’t have time or resources to devote to a full hair routine so I thought I would share the little bits I’ve learned along the way.
Dae Signature Shampoo $24: I’ve been using Dae Shampoo for a little over a year now and love what it has done for my hair. Here are the things I love about it: It smells delicious. My face and back skin has completely cleared up. No more little bumps on my forehead or shoulder blades. It doesn’t require a lot of product to sudds up my whole head which means it lasts a long time. It rinses quickly and doesn’t leave any weird residue.
Dae Monsoon Moisture Mask $28: I apply a small amount of this mask to the ends of my hair after shampooing and then twist it up and let it sit on my head while I wash my body and shave. I have the Signature Conditioner, but I’ve found that since I only wash my hair a couple of times a week, I like using the mask as my conditioner and it cuts out a set which is nice. This stuff leaves my hair feeling so soft and shiny even in In Utah’s dry air.
Kerastase’s Mousse Bouffant Volumizing Hair Mousse $32: I have a fair amount of hair but it is fine and very straight which means lacking in volume. I ask this mousse to my roots when it is towel dry and right before I blow dry it. I find it helps maintain volume and styling.
Dyson Airwrap $599: Ok. The Dyson. Here are my thoughts. It is obviously a very pricey tool. If that’s within your budget, awesome. If not, that’s ok too. I treated myself to one a little over a year ago and I do use it every time I do my hair in one way or another. I love how it refreshes a style. I love how shiny and smooth it can make my hair. That being said, it doesn’t exactly save me time the day of. Over the course of the week, totally. Everything I know about using my Dyson I learned from watching Mallory’s videos.
Dry Shampoo Pack $19.47: Once my hair is dry, I apply dry shampoo. I’ve found that applying while my hair is clean not only helps keep volume throughout the day but helps stop the grease from accumulating in the first place. There are a lot of dry shampoos out there and I just have such a hard time spending a lot of money on them. This is the brand I have been using happily for years.
R+Co Dallas Thickening Spray $12: Once my hair is dry and styled I lightly apply this thickening spray to the body of my hair which is typically lightly curled. I like how it adds some texture and segmentation. More than anything I wish I could bath in the smell. Truly it is incredible and I feel a rush of love for myself when I catch a whiff throughout the day. It really does smell that good.
Hair clips $9: One thing that has helped me keep my hair cleaner which leads to fewer washes and less product use has been simplifying clipping it up out of the way when I don’t need to be touching it or letting it shine. These hair clips do that while looking nice and skipping the massive dent caused by a ponytail.
Ouai Matte Pomade $24: Not pictured. I found this pomade thanks to Courtney Grow. When a current wash has reached its limit, I sing to myself “one day more” and then do a clean girl slicked back low bun. This pomade has a really nice matte finish and keeps everything in its place.
